NIWF Worm Castings
NIWF Worm Castings
Worm farms come in all shapes and sizes, from a coffee can to a plastic tote under a kitchen sink to a multi-acreage commercial operation with millions and millions of worms.
Worms can dispose of kitchen scraps rather than putting them into a landfill.
On a commercial scale they may raise fishing worms to produce some of the
best all-natural plant food available but also have other uses such as waste reduction/treatment and toxic site cleanups.
‘‘Unfortunately, much of our world has lost its worms due to chemical use and overuse in the farming industry. Worm farms are a way to restore all natural solutions for multi-use for a multi-Industry use.”
-Northern Illinois Worm Farm
Worms eat organic waste, process it through their digestive systems allowing them to remove harmful toxins, and excrete castings (worm poop). Castings (worm poop) are replete with good bacteria, microbes, protozoa, nematodes, fungi, and a host of other beneficial micro-organisms that feed plants in ways chemical fertilizers cannot replicate (refer to benefits list).
BENEFITS
Increases plant availability intake
Pest resistance
Greater harvests
Naturally enchanced flavorful fruits/veggies
What are castings?
Why do I need them?
Worm castings are, if I may be indelicate, simply worm poop.
God created worms with the unique ability to take waste, sometimes even toxic waste, eat it, and remove
harmful bacteria and other pathogens while interjecting good bacteria and a host of micro-biologicals that
extract needful nutrients and minerals from the soil, making them available to plant roots. (bio-availability)
Worm castings do not in and of themselves have a lot of the expected nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium
one looks for in chemical fertilizer. N.I.W.F. worm castings/vermicompost contains no chemicals, hence they
are not called fertilizer, but plant food.
While a human can exist by eating only sugar-frosted cereals, sugar and caffeine laden soft drinks, and fast-
food hamburgers and fries, it is much healthier to eat a well-balanced, nutritious diet filled with fruits and
vegetables.
We at N.I.W.F. believe the same is true for our gardens. Our plants do much better with plant nutrition
provided by the biologically active worm castings. Rather than force-feeding them chemical replacements for
naturally living nutritive microbes, protozoa, bacteria, and other microscopic organisms, we choose to inject
life into our soil and not harmful chemicals. This living soil, in turn, gives us flavorful, healthy foods that
enhance our health.
